Life in Haiti is harsh for most Haitians. I think that the unemployment rate is around 80%. You will see people trying to make a living the best they can. Many women are on the side of the road selling things. If you slow down with your car or I was to make it obvious that I was taking photos, the car was "stormed" with people trying to sell their wares. Subsequently, I did not want to be too obvious taking photos and mostly took photos as the truck was moving.
There is trash everywhere! Just piles of it! Like I mentioned in my other post, Wycleff Jean is using his money from the music business to clean up the streets. But it almost seems like a drop in a bucket... Apparently, Haiti is growing in size...trash gets dumped into the ocean, by the port, and then dirt is put on top...and voila! The island is growing.
This is as close as I would get to Cite de Soleil. Here you can see the outskirts of the worst slum in Port au Prince. Just recently, 800 UN troops went into that area and had a big shoot out with gang members. This is one area that the UN has no control over.
